Protecting Our Drinking Water

A cross connection is any connection where drinking water could come into contact with non-drinking water, chemicals, or other contaminants. If water pressure changes, those contaminants can sometimes flow backward into the drinking water system. Spanish Fork City’s Cross Connection Control Program helps prevent that from happening.

Common Cross Connections at Home

Garden hoses can create a cross connection when submerged in pools, buckets, containers, or attached to chemical sprayers. A hose bib vacuum breaker can help prevent contaminated water from flowing backward.

In-ground sprinkler systems are another common source. Irrigation water around sprinkler heads can contain fertilizer, pesticides, animal waste, and other contaminants. Lawn irrigation systems should have an approved backflow prevention assembly and be tested annually.

Other potential cross connections include:

• Swimming pools and hot tubs

• Residential fire sprinkler systems

• Private wells

• Home businesses that use chemicals or medical equipment

How You Can Help

Keep garden hoses above the water level when filling pools, buckets, or other containers, and make sure your irrigation system has proper backflow protection.
